How to hit the sandbag effectively

This mainly stems from a FAQ on how we can use the bag more effectively in improving our kickboxing (or any martial arts) technique. A key point here is to visualise the direction of force that will travel through the bag.

Have you been working hard on the heavy bag? Trying to hit the bag with all your might and attempt to make the bag “fly” or swing with each strikes?

If you are, then you probably need to think twice about striking method.

Hitting vs Pushing the Bag

Recall that the aim of the strikes (punches or even kicks), is to hit (vs push) the target. If the bag is swinging wildly with each strike, do you think you are hitting or are you, in fact, pushing the bag?

Consider the picture above, where the target is a bag filled with water. Your objective would then be to hit the bag and have waves travel through the bag and to the opposite side, forming a bulge.

Thus, if we are to translate that onto the bag, the end objective is to make the bag “jump”. If you find that the bag travels too much while you are hitting or kicking it, it probably indicates that you are pushing rather than hitting it.
